This is unusual, the steering wheel appears to be not perfectly round... |

1961 Plymouth Fury 4-door hardtop |

Normal, but I think the oval steering wheel was an option on the Fury |

Is it just me or is there something "off" about the first group of pics submitted by Wampa-One? It looks like they are trying to make a 4-door hardtop look like a 4-door sedan. Notice the "b" post but the doors don't have a window frame. -- Last edit: 2008-01-13 05:29:05 |

Normal, the 4-door sedan had different door posts |

Agreed but in this pic there's a center post and a frameless door. Chrysler products had frames around the door class od sedans. Frameless on hardtops. http://img412.imageshack.us/my.php?image=capture3hzw5.jpg |

You're right. This is typical movie situation = to avoid that you see the camera reflecting in the back window, the made something in cardboard or similar so you think the back window is up. For the same reason all rear-view mirrors are away on the cars in the movies. |

Very cool info, Yvon52! |

The rectangular steering wheel was another Chrysler feature from that period. Just imagine pushbutton automatic, and a steering your car with a square wheel! I love the 60's! |

It's some sort of early '60s Plymouth, I can tell that much. |

1961 Plymouth Fury 4 door hardtop : it has the full width lateral molding strip. |

Another one of same type and year in same episode (5.7), according to car nerd and pilou. This one is only 2 stars |

Would the rectangular steering wheel be annoying compared to a round one? |
◊ 2017-06-14 02:49 |
Well, it didn't last past 1961... |

Crazy metal flake translucent square steering wheel. Nobody but Virgil Exneir would make such outlandish design. |

Like others, I noticed that they had added what appears to be a piece of painted wood to make a 4-door hardtop look like a sedan. However, I think they did this for continuity because the cutaway vehicle used for the scenes of Gilbert and Beaver playing in the car was a sedan with a B-pillar and door frames. It looks particularly goofy when the car is photographed from the front three-quarter view as Wally is (illegally) pulling the car into back into the driveway. The faux wood B-pillar looks like it's far inboard because the car has curved glass but the lumber is flat. |
