I'd say 47/48 Champion based on the short bumper with optional fender guards. The taillights look like the units of the Champion rather than those of the Commander. Black rear window surround would make it a Deluxe or even a base Custom as it doesn't appear to have a gravel shield, but tough to make out. Did the Customs for 47-49 have painted taillight bezels or was that only for the later ones? |

I think we will go with 1947 Champion, here. In the thumbnail, I can just barely make out a bumper guard and the best I can tell, it's of the '47 design. Let's list as Champion if for no other reason than I can't make out any chrome bars in the front fender side vent area (all Commanders had three of them on top of the side vents) but I'm not really sure if that isn't covered by the foreground. Can't really see the tail lamps clearly. Could be of either design, really. Now, let's deal with Lateef's interesting points: 1) All Champions in the '47-'49 range had bright tail lamp bezels like the Commanders. 2) There were no "Champion Custom" models in '47-'49. That special designation did not appear until model year 1950. 3) Yes, the lack of rear window trim would make it a Deluxe rather than a Regal Deluxe. These were the only two trim lines for Champion in '47-'49. The Commander had these two and also the Land Cruiser (technically part of the Commander line, not a separate series). 4) Lateef is correct that bumper wing guards were available in both '47 and '48, with wraparound bumpers in '49 making wing guards obsolete. As a side note, FRONT bumper wing guards were standard on '47 Commanders but optional on '48's. Rear wing guards were optional both years on both series. Whew! |

I thought so, I was going by what was said here thinking this pertained Studebakers of the vintage in question. |

That comment was misleading on my part since it applied only to post-1949 models. I should not have posted it there and will delete it. Thanks for the catch! -- Last edit: 2020-12-16 02:18:13 |
