![]() ![]() ![]() The owner says that it is a Ford Mercury. Though that he is drunk in the scene in which he says that, by searching for "Ford Mercury Colony Park" two of the eight (only!) links found are Finnish sites. Was it the name used in Finland? Or is it just an error? |

I remember the old Mercury Cougars being called that in Europe too years back?? ("Ford Mercury Cougar") My thoughts then & now are that somehow, somebody got an idea that Ford is the make,Mercury is the model, and Cougar(in that case)is a sub-model?? (Of course,a Mercury(make)is built by Ford(Motor Company)and Colony Park is the Model,or if you're really picky, the sub-model?(Top line Grand Marquis wagon)) |

I've heard many people, even in US-made films and TV shows, refer to Mercuries as "Ford Mercury" (to a lesser extent, this also goes for Lincoln). The writers who were responsible for those lines weren't exactly car buffs, but I guess this is a common misconception. The Cougar was sold as FORD COUGAR in Europe, no Mercury was even remotely mentioned (and the badges were all Ford, no cougar appearing anywhere). Most people didn't even know this car came from the US, it was thought to be a coupe version of the Mondeo (which it was) and thus a thoroughly European car. |

The Cougars I were referring to were the older 1967-95 versions, the time I recalled seeing this was the 1970's-early '80s. Sorry for the confusion. |

To my knowledge it's just a Mercury Colony Park. These are used US imports and not officially sold in Finland. In early 1990's thousands and thousands of American wagons were imported to Finland because of a loope in a law. These cars were registered as vans and were tax-free. Now they cost nothing but you still see plenty of them on the roads. |

We had the same "law problem" in Belgium with recent SUVs like VW Touareg, etc. which could be registered as tax-free utility car, but they quickly changed the law to exclude these passenger SUV and still accept (most of) the real utility cars (i.e. pickups, vans, or even wagons/SUVs/hatchback without rear sets) -- Last edit: 2007-12-08 22:38:45 |
