did it go under "Austin Mini"..i thought it was either Austin Metro or British Leyland Metro..the one in pic has a styalized BL badge to the grille, like the Morris Ital of the same period. it isnt the MG version tho, as they had MG octagon decals about 2 foot diamiter to the door/wing panel.

It was just Austin Metro by 1985 (when the five door was launched).

The Autin is more visible, the BMW more intersting...

Why more interesting? I'd list the Austin, much more visible and we do not have many of these on the site, I guess

I wonder what the black car is, otherwise the Metro and the BMW (not all of it can be seen) aren't special enough to be really worth listing.

Metro is visible enough to be listed, though.

I guess that's the car I'd make this page for out of the 3 since it's the most visible, but you know I don't really like background cars unless it's something nice. Metros were just cheap tin cans, no one misses them.

The "nice" criteria is a bad one, as it depends on the people. A good view of a car is always "nice" for the site. This one is a little small due to the picture size which itself is small, but it is still OK I think.
If some like Ford Tempo, there will be some that like Austin Metro :D

The idea of "nice" should be easy to understand if you keep it simple, it's like, who is nicer between Charlize Theron and Aileen Wuornos? But then cars aren't like people.

There is also the problem that "nice" is in the eye of the beholder - one man's trash is another man's treasure, etc. In my opinion, the little, tiny, far away, partial, blurred or obstructed pictures of common cars are unnecessary, particularly when they are background cars. My personal criterion for "nice" as regards background cars on this site would be rare/unusual cars or exceptionally clear pics. I sense a trend on the site to list everything with wheels that one can possibly find in a movie even if its only a small piece of completely unidentifiable fender or a supid lawnmower. I will go along with the trend but don't really like it and think that we could benefit from some clear cut (and enforced) guidelines for listing.

Hear hear. By the way the BMW looks like an early 320 about 1979.

And what about those that do not respect the guidelines? (as currently there are kind of guidelines, but what should be done when they are not respected?)
Why such discussion comes back on picture that seem "acceptable" to me when I compared that to some for which nobody except me say anything

I agree with everything wrenchhead says. I still think something ought to done about the more extreme examples of background vehicles.

...

I am aware of discussions we have had but I am not aware of any written guidelines, where can I find them?

If the guidelines are not respected then simply delete the posting - I trust your judgment completely but if you are unconfortable with doing it I would suggest a poll and if 3 admins agree then simply delete the posting. If there is A LINK ON THE MAIN PAGE to the guidelines and if postings that are not in compliance are deleted then perhaps folks will do better. For chronic abusers of the guidelines just take away some posting privilages. I am perfectly content for you to do that to me if I get out of line.

I didn't nean to attack this particular picture, I just raise an issue when something makes me think of it and I decide to grumble a little. I generally don't read all comments that are posted for those pics that I have no hope of assisting with. :/ (I do a little better in the winter when I am not so busy with other things).

I agree that the pics you cite are exactly the kind of thing I was talking about. I certainly don't want to hurt anyone's feelings or start a big argument but I have to say that, given free rein, I would simply delete them.

Its probably a good thing that I don't have free rein.
I would not do nearly as good a job as you do in keeping this site such an enjoyable and pleasant place to visit for all ages and tastes. :king:

Well, nothing really written clearly, but for most of the members it seemed clear: if the vehicle has no role and is not especially rare (in the context) it has to be "well visible": not blurry, not only a part of it, not too far/small. Cars seen through the window while a car is running (or parked, when the car pass by them) is a typical example of what is usually not really worth listing as they only take a small part of the image and are seen for a fraction of second. Same for cars in a street full of cars, not often useful to list many of these.

Thanks, perhaps I will try work up something worth posting a link to and we can debate it on the forum. Its hard to get people to follow guidelines if they are not clear, readily available and basically agreed to. You have enought work to do just keeping things running smoothly without worrying about this sort of thing.

 You're right of course... If I would have to look at it a BMW 3 is a more intersting car than the Metro, but that is only a matter of opinion. It is obvious the Metro shows much better in this picture, so it is a good choice I think....
