That's actually the "American built" model....We don't get the ones that I hear they have in Europe?(Which I understand are a bit better/nicer than ours)

Well, it is still based on the original European mk1, no?
Here we got a mk2 in 2004, and for USA the new model is planned in 2008 (completely different from the European one, this time).

Well the 2008 American Focus is actually an update of the 2005-2007 which itself is an update of the 2000-2004. Despite the new styling its been the same car since 2000. We're supposed to get a version of the European model in 2010+. I think Americans get short changed on alot of cool products they offer elsewhere in the world. I think the companies are now starting to realise that (i.e the entire Saturn brand is the same as Opel and of course the Holden-designed Zeta cars).

Teh Saturn range isn't the same as Opel's yet, but the plan is that Saturn and Opel 'will share numerous models':

On Wikipedia they seem to make it more than an update: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Focus_%28North_America%29

Quote The North American Ford Focus was given a complete restyling in 2007 as a 2008 model year and was unveiled at the 2007 North American International Auto Show. Featuring Ford's new signature grille design, the exterior was completely redesigned. A two-door coupe will be offered for the first time, in addition to the 4-door sedan. Both 3-door and 5-door hatchback will be dropped, as well as the station wagon. The interior was also redesigned and features a message center on the top of the dashboard, which displays radio information.

...

Reportedly, in 2004 Ford of North America again had a choice to modify the European Focus (see Ford Focus (International)) or develop a second generation of the North American Focus. Ford chose the latter, due to lower budget requirements, but reportedly went over budget and in the end the 2008 Focus redesign cost more than the projected costs of modifying the European Focus for North American Market (Autoweek - link missing).

What's more, Mexico now gets the European Focus.

The Wikipedia entry also links to an article explaining why the US gets a different Focus:

Quote Today, Ford sells a different version of the Focus to the rest of the world. The European-made Focus is a superior vehicle that features much more dynamic styling, better performance and superior quality. Many industry analysts have wondered why Ford cannot sell the European Focus -- widely regarded as one of the best small cars in the world -- in North America.

The answer is price. While the Focus fits snugly in the compact economy segment in the United States, it is considered a midsize car in most of the rest of the world. In fact, it is considered an upmarket vehicle in many countries and is priced accordingly.

For example, the sporty Focus Zetec starts at $25,491 in Britain, which is more than the price of a Ford Fusion, the next car up in Ford's domestic lineup. In the United States, prices for the Focus start at less than $14,000 -- and that is before rebates.

The Focus was originally designed for the European market in 1998, then redesigned for North America in 2000. Ford introduced a completely redesigned Focus for the European market in 2004 that was based on the Mazda3 platform. The company decided not to bring that vehicle to the United States because it doubted it could sell the new Focus for enough to cover the cost.

According to Hall, Ford is taking a different approach with the next-generation Focus [in about 2010], starting with the North American version of the automobile and working up from there. "It makes sense to design the base vehicle for the market with the greatest cost pressure," he said, explaining that it's easier to add on to a vehicle than take away content or features.

The American version of the next-generation Focus will still differ markedly from its European counterpart. It will still be aimed at a more cost-conscious segment of the market than its European sibling and it will still have to meet this country's more stringent safety requirements.

It may have new styling and body styles but it's the same platform and engine. To me that's not a redesign.

I didn't mean they had the same exact line up of cars but all but the Outlook is an Americanized Opel.
