First on IMCDB. Note Four Four label, not the later 4/4.

To my knowledge the Series I (1936-50) did use digits, but written '4-4'. From Series II on (1955-today) '4/4' is being used.
It is interesting to note that the 'Morgan 4/4 Club' was established in 1951 and according to their own sources used the slash right from the start.

Morgan themselves list as Four Four:

I suppose if we can find some period advertising it would comfirm.

Four and 4 are the same, - and / are the same, it is just easier to list all with the same name

Not really, look at the ASCII code! ;)

Easier, yes, but not precise. :)

I've found a 1939 servicing diagram that states 4/4 so have changed, to be consistent as advised, thanks.

Sorry, fellows, but the Wikipedia reference is wrong. Claiming the early cars were 4-4's is one of the most common entrenched errors in the Morgan world (and there are quite a few others), even now in the Factory's new magazine. It was first claimed, apparently, by the author of several early books on the 4-wheeler cars who simply did not research the issue adequately if at all, and the error was simply then copied by others without checking.

Extensive recent research confirms that Morgan has never produced a 4-4 model, these cars were 4/4's from the very first prototype on. A short summary of this research can be found on the website of the Morgan Owners Club of Australia, going to the "Technical" section, and clicking on "The 4-4 Error, or Morgan's Equivalent of the Unicorn.

BTW, if this was first registered in late 1937 it has been extensively modified. The bar grille didn't appear until into 1938, the front guard to this profile wasn't until late 1938, and the steering tie rods are to a much later pattern, well after they stopped making Series 1 cars. It could have a rack and pinion steering box, but the photo isn't clear enough to verify this. The headlight bar has been chromed, and someone has whacked a Flying M emblem on the radiator cap, something the bar grille cars pretty well never had (although a lot seem to have been added in recent years!).

Must go out and work on the second of mine...

Can confirm that ABD plate series started issue in Oct 37, so DVLA info seems spot on.
