I've heard of these races that took place on frozen lakes in the 50's. Names that pop up are Buick, Oldsmobile, Frazer - Nash and Arnolt - Bristol. That is together with obvious cars like the white BMW 327.

I've to dig deep in to my collection of magazines and other memorabilia before I can come up with a plausible answer.

Having visited the local automobile club, I think I have some more information:

After WW 2 it was almost an impossible to buy racing cars, and one solution was to let the racing drivers build their cars themselves. That is that they took a chassis from some existing car, built a lightweight body around and put a tuned (usually) American engine in it.

The result became to be known as "Nordiska Specialvagnsklassen" (ENG: Nordic Special Racing Class) and existed roughly from 1947 until the mis 50's. Some competitions took place on frosen lakes, but there were also hill climbs, racing around horse racing tracks and some racing on permanent tracks, like Gelleråsbanan in Sweden.

Hence the pictured car is a one off and can be rather difficult to find if one is not, by chance, stumbling on a picture of it.

Thank you tore-40! Those BMW's were very competitive indeed.

Remember, this is the current user. Back then the number changed with a new owner or if the owner moved to a new district. Also, if re-registered after 1971, it would have the AB12345 style plates, but some years ago you could apply for use of a historical registration number, thus getting A69935. Anyway it seems plausible indeed.

Could you at least verify a 1939 BMW, from whats visible? Front suspension perhaps, if original?

I haven't seen an old BMW underneath in the flesh, but If I understand my books correctly it uses a tube chassis with transverse leaf springs extending from the middle and outwards. Nothing of that can be seen on the main picture, but rather the track control arms which might be seen in this auction picture Link to "www.the-saleroom.com" . Also the rear wings reminds me of the original shape, but the doors doesn't.

Yes, I believe this is not unlikely a BMW 328.
