Here in the FG K100 the 6-cylinder petrol or diesel engines were used in the 5-tonner, and the extra length required the addition of a "snout". The Morris FM K40 was specific to PO telephones with an even longer snout for the three-seater cab, and the 4-cylinder engine moved forwards. -- Last edit: 2016-10-29 19:20:57 |

Aus build for long-nose was known as Leyland FM 4.60, 4.80, 5.60 and 5.80 - came as 4 or 5 ton and with 160" or 180" wheelbases, which explains the numbers, and 3993cc petrol or 5665cc diesel. My book says 1961-68 (but that seems too early a start date??) and a small picture shows the round sidelights |

Start date of 1961 would be possible if Australian production was in advance of UK, which was itself delayed (for what reason I don't know). Design was complete and the tooling would potentially be available. The 5-tonner FG was introduced at the time of the Scottish Motor Show in November 1961, but it only went into full production during 1963, after I believe the transfer of FG trucks from Birmingham to Bathgate. Interesting also that Australian Leylands were known as the FM? I guess they adopted their own naming or alternatively BMC in the UK decided to remain with FG and only use FM for the post office application. Googled photos show rectangular sidelights upto about E reg UK vehicles then round replacements - again Australia could be different but I had the idea that I have seen similar rectangular sidelights on Australian builds? edit: sidelights here on this truck, I think do look different compared to UK possibly smaller... -- Last edit: 2016-10-29 21:52:07 |

I'm not saying my book is totally bulletproof, but it seems the best source we've got so far on what Aus did. It shows the FG as well, initially as Austin then Leyland during 1960-68, apparently just like UK models (2 or 3 ton, 145" wheelbase only). My uncertainty about start date was more the apparent branding of the FM as only Leyland, as the BLMC merger in UK was 1968, so no obvious reason for Aus to use Leyland make on BMC product before that point. |

So looking again at the relationship between Australian and UK FG models they seem similar in branding - 1970 Leyland FG would be a reasonable identification (although earlier Austin or Morris also possible). Australian cabs appear to have extra vents; tropical cooling mod, either side of the 'snout' and an extra nameplate just before the door (similar to other Australian Austin FF models). |
