this is also a CitiCar/ComutaCar ~ or some variation thereof. the 2nd one added to the site today. even the optional "Rally Stripe" matches, though i can't - at the moment - find an example that has the extended... i hestiate to call them "rear quarter panels", with the additional windows. perhaps this one has 4 seats..? some blend of the CitiCar/ComutaCar and the CitiVan..? |

There was such a crappy film with Randy Quaid from 1980 or 1981 "Heart of the Robot" ![]() ![]() Edit. Or rather it was a CitiCar version. ![]() -- Last edit: 2010-05-29 15:34:45 |

This vehicle is known as a CitiVan. It is an extended wheel base version of the CitiCar. In 1979, Comuter Vehicles, Inc the successor to Vanguard CitiCar sold the remaining stock of these as their first year only Comuta-Van. http://rci.rutgers.edu/~crisitel/EV/CitiVan.jpg It is rummored that only 19 were ever built. from 1980 on, the Comuta-Van was a much larger Postal style vehicle with sliding side doors. Given the year of this production, I would guess that this is most likely one of the 1979 Comuter-Van's. We have since confirmed that at least 23 of these were built. I have found that Randy Quaid Movie; I believe it is Heartbeeps (1981) and I am certain that it has CVI built vehicles as Frank Flower was always trying to promote them any way he could. ^There is now entry but only with few pics taken from theatrical trailer -> /movie.php?id=82507 And indeed the car visible there has larger bumpers of CVI era. In case of this car here, for a while I thought that two-tone - white-amber - indicators (with parking lights perhaps) can confirm a later CVI made car, but "unfortunately" such lights are to meet also in older Sebring-Vanguards. In fact both types of indicators - all orange and orange-white - are to meet in older and newer cars for some reasons. -- Last edit: 2020-01-07 21:11:42 |

Perhaps it really is. At the back it had colored bar between taillamps - judging by the pics in the web it was most typical (if not only typical) for the Comuta-Van. For some reasons "vans" kept smaller bumpers. In this body there had to be more space inside for battery, but I thought these larger bumpers were added also to improve image of the car. ![]() ![]() The movie is copyrighted for 1979 so indeed it was product placment most likely. |
