Aw, they shouldn't have done this. :/

Must everyone say that when an old car gets wrecked in a film? This is set 1983 so they couldn't use a modern car.

Sorry, G-Mann. That was my first comment of that kind, but you're right. It is unnecessary, and I'm going to delete it.

I didn't mean to pick on you in particular, it's just a lot of people on this site keep saying this kind of thing. Don't delete your comment ;) I want yours and mine to stay to show how I feel. The thing that gets me is that a few members seem to think anything that went out of production years ago is special and must not be deliberately destroyed, even if it's not particularly rare and has no real financial value (but doesn't that generally determine the desirability of an item?) I'm not saying this BMW was a bad car (although it could been in bad condition for all we know), but I really think it's daft when people lament the cars that were mediocre even for their time (like the British Leyland cars).

The Alfa Romeo Spider looks like it came off worse here and I'd much rather have one of those.

Alright, let's leave it here as a warning sign.

By the way, I know what you mean. By and large, I share your point of view. There are much worse things happening on the world than mediocre filmmakers destroying nice cars in order to make lackluster movies. And you certainly will not see me whining when the Top Gear-fellows blow up another Morris!

And I think it's nerdy and anoraky to care too much about that kind of thing (unless something really valuable gets destroyed, but that never happens on purpose).

I just read in the newspaper, that last week a 1937 Lagonda in the value of 370.000 Euro was heavily damaged nearby the town of Hannover (ca.130.000 Euro repair-costs). It had a breakdown, the owner stopped it beside the street and has correctly used the hazard-lamps (mandatory in Germany, for all cars from all years, even for pre-war-cars) and has used the warning-triangle, too. It hadn't helped. A 60-year-old BMW-driver hadn't seen it and smashed in the left back side of this pre-war-classic.

Not nice, but it happens every day somewhere...

For some people, what is rare is valuable. Value is not especially in money. And an expensive damaged car is more likely to be repaired than a cheap rare one.
(but in the case of this BMW, it is indeed not a big deal, except if it was in mint state, then it is sad, but still not a drama)

@cl82: it doesn't looked, like the BMW was in perfect condition. Some parts are missing and the paintwork isn't shiny and not identical on the doors and the fenders. So I think, they took a -quite worthless- wreck.

Yes I understand sentimental value but I still think it's sad the way people were bleating on about the Morris Marinas being wrecked on Top Gear and so on when they'd probably never even owned one (or their parents had had one). Most people only apply sentimental value to their own possessions.

@ Ingo: Yes, it's not in a good shape indeed. It's, was you said, probably a "brushed-up" wreck. The paintjob is indeed bad (und die Spaltmasse stimmen irgendwie auch nirgends, soweit ich das sehen kann). As we said, there are countless things in life that are more important than cars. Still, back in the 80s, there were a couple of relatives that had E12s, that is why I became sentimental for a second and posted that pathetic comment- which proved to be a big mistake.

I think it's a real shame this car was wrecked. It's always a shame when a vehicle which hasn't been produced for many years is destroyed. I'm not nerdy or sad person when I say that. That is the way I feel but I'm still not going to loose a night sleep over this one. Maybe I tend to romanticize old days and items but there is nothing wrong about that. I think it's a good quality in a person because most of the people do not appreciate anything old. To them I usually say 'you can't know the future without first knowing the past'.

It's OK, it's OK, it wasn't pathetic, don't feel bad ;)

Anyway, I think we're clear that this wasn't in good condition. And when a car stops being used and deteriorates even further it must be decided whether to restore and repair it or have it scrapped. Otherwise you'll be like my grandad who only just got rid of his 24-year-old Audi (hadn't left the driveway in 4 years and it was getting shabby, he'd stopped using it and bought another car) and once had two disused old Jaguar XJ6s and a rotting, moss-covered Morris Minor Traveller taking up space in his garage and driveway for many years (I think the Morris must have sat there a good 20 years), and even worse than that a wreck of a 1960s caravan which is still around the side of his house and has been since the 1970s. And his garage is full of junk he has no use for. My grandad isn't a collector or a lover of old things, he's just a man who never throws things out.

By the way this isn't why I sometimes find it a little daft when people lament the destruction of any old car. Particularly with Jeremy Clarkson and Top Gear, it's what he does, stop letting it bother you.

That's alright, G-Mann. I didn't mean it that serious ;)

I can't see air outlet on C pillar. Bonnet doesn't overlap side of body. I think it's E28.

But the trunk shape is clearly E12, as is the impact protection strip on the side (4 elements, the E28 only has 3 and they are thicker and the last small piece on the rear wheel arch has been omitted)
