This scene must be from Bulgaria, although the rest of the vehicles are sold in America. Were they sold in Europe too? Maybe also they brought the Saratoga to use in the parts filmed in the USA thinking no one would notice? |

I'm pretty sure this is the Boyana studio backlot in Sofia. How was the name in the U.S.? I had such a car as a rental car in 1993 in Denver,CO, and as I remember, it was a "Saratoga", too. This is the reason, why I could name it easily. Otherwise m y knowldege about US-cars is weak. |

Called a Dodge Spirit,Plymouth Acclaim and Chrysler Le Baron in N.American market.And they were very common rental cars.From what I understand,the import Saratoga is 95-97% same car as the US Le Baron?? (Things like lens,Lic Plt brackets,nameplates,guages etc different....plus isn't a stick shift available...or maybe a Diesel,too?? Dunno abotu Saratoga, but I'd doubt they had anything the US version hadn't. No diesel engines were fitted into imported Chryslers then, but the Voyager for the European market was built in Graz and fitted with VM diesels. You could also obviously have one with a manual (but only for the smaller engines). |

The Voyager I only know as a Chrysler, not as a Dodge. A Chrysler Le Baron was -in Germany- only the convertible. The 4-door-sedan was a Saratoga. But in Germany I have seen a Saratoga only one or two times. I know the car -as I said- from my trip to the U.S. I've heard, too, that there shall be US-cars with Diesel-engine, but except SUV's and Vans I cannot remember, that I have ever seen an US-made sedan, coupe or convertible with a Diesel-engine. Probably some Chrysler got a Mercedes-Diesel-engine in the last years. I don't know, US-made Chrylser were always out the of the public view in Germany. The Voyager was the most popular Chrysler over here, then sometimes you can see a Le Baron from pre-Mercedes-times, sometimes a Neon or Stratus, perhaps a SUV, that's all. In the last ADAC-magazine was shown a ranking of the members. Chrysler belongs together with Rover and Chevrolet (nowadays only Daewoo-products in Germany) to the companies with the worst reputation. -- Last edit: 2007-12-08 22:40:58 |

The Sebring, Avenger and Caliber come with a 2.0 VW diesel for Europe - other than that, I can't recall anything non-truck with a diesel from America. |

In 1978 Oldsmobile came with a diesel engine, and later all GM-makes (even Cadillac) joined the club. Hmm, yes now I remember a comment of a guy, who owned a Oldsmobile Diesel of the lates 70ies: "A torque like a shunting locomotive" But there could't be sold more than a few dozen over here. I cannot remember, that I've seen any over the years, not even on oldtimer-meetings or -markets in the last years. |

Horrendous reliability? O.k, this can be a reason, why it was not possible to sell them. No chance to be a serious rival to the Mercedes Diesel, the engines, who survived millions of kilometers, not only thousands, without getting broken. |

The Olds Diesel was actually created out of a petroleum-engine block, which was quite obviously unsuitable for such use, and GM had little experience with passenger-car diesel application (not to mention their usual quality problems at that time). Benz was on the opposite end of the scale in all the areas mentioned. |

What was really bad was (#1)It was based off a Gas engine that actually was quite reliable but mostly (#2) When you say "Diesel Powered Car" in this country,two cars come to mind? One you can't kill(Mercedes,with it's 500,000-1,000,000 mile reliablity)and one that won't stay running?(Olds 350 "DX",1978-81 might get 35-40,000 before heads/inj. pump goes again.Tragic that by the time GM figured out the problems & redesigned it(1982-85)where they did hold up,nobody would touch one!!!) |
