I keep telling you guys the Willys MB & Ford GPW is a "jeep". The "Jeep" did not come about until after WWII after a lengthly court battle when Willys won the rights to the name "Jeep" which is how it has been since and passed along to the parent company. A jeep and a Jeep are two different vehicles...if you want to be correct. Of course most any small 4x4 is a Jeep to most people. Just so you know. |

The etymology of the word jeep goes back a bit further, back to the first world war, and was used for new recruits and unproven machinery. Looking at the history of the word it is rather strange that the company that started to use the name last got the rights. Probably a matter of briefcases full of printed paper ... with unregistered serial numbers. So for the Willys MB and following it was always a name, in the beginning not official, therefore in inverted kommas. Later it became part of the brand name and later again the sole brand name. |
