I thought all export GMs were sold as Chevys in Europe? |

I'm pretty sure of that too. (Wikipedia says you're right) |

I would have said that this one was never officially exported to Europe. So it could be any car, if it was imported by an individual. -- Last edit: 2007-02-09 11:07:34 |

Could this be originally an import by US military personnel. I know a lot of the US cars seen in the UK (and Germany) were owned by staff on the US bases. Could they then be sold-on in Europe? In that case I guess any make or model is possible. |

US military personnel in Europe used to have cars (even European models) with American specs like big bumpers, sidelamps and red flashers. In the early eighties GM cars were sold in Holland as Buicks, Cadillacs, Chevrolets, Oldsmobiles and Pontiacs, but in 1985 no GM's were imported anymore (till 1990) because of the expensive dollar at that time. Chevrolet Caprice was very common as a hearse, as well as in Holland converted Cadillacs. I don't think the big Buick wagons were sold in the time. So I think one can list it as a Chevrolet Caprice Wagon |

Swiss CKD versions of the Caprice wagon used Buick wagon tail lamp housings as it was easier to separate the amber rear indicator and reverse lamps vs. using the original Chevrolet housing. |

What I see is definately a Chevrolet Caprice SW with Buick taillights. And Sunbar & DynaMike are right about the number/types of American cars you'll see in Europe. Most you'll see are near a US Base(sold either when returning to the States,or sold to buy/traded for a BMW or Mercedes,at least, that's what went on in Germany??)or it came from/was registered in(mostly)Switzerland or Belgium.(sometimes also Holland and Sweden?)(What I saw when I was there,at least?)The US Spec European cars were mostly bought through certain dealers, usually special ordered,in order to be able to export it back to the States at end of the tour.(Up to 1981-82,export laws changed then for private export of a car...FWIW,I liked the Euro versions better myself, the bumpers actually look like they belong on the car for one thing!) |
