I'm not sure how the vans were sold in Germany but the 'DAF' badging on the back probably indicates an export version of the Leyland-DAF 400 series high-roof van. After a management buy-out, the 'LDV' brand started in 1993 and would not have carried the 'DAF' badge I guess? |

sorry I've now amended my previous post .gif ":)") So, with DAF badging (assuming there was not a relabelling for the export markets) it would come be between Freight Rover and LDV eras - so 1989-1993 DAF 400 is the correct name? Origin should be changed to UK. [Whilst looking about, it seems LDV is now owned by GAZ! Didn't know that, that has been kept quiet?] |

'LDV' I think had financial difficulties (not sure but they may have been close to going into receivership) about 18 months ago and I guess the investment company that owned them sold LDV to GAZ. After many years producing the Sherpa/Pilot/Convoy vans in Birmingham LDV had bought the rights to produce LDV Maxus vans which had been a joint venture with Daewoo. I guess they were over-stretched financially by introducing the new production lines. The Leyland-DAF 400 and therefore a DAF 400 would only have been built in Birmingham in the UK. |

But have its ancestry into 1983 ex-Freight Rover Sherpa(at its time descends by 1974 Leyland Sherpa),shifted since 1986 under DAF Brand and V 400 name(later build also with twice Brand Leyland-DAF) |

All of the 'Sherpa'/'Pilot'/'Convoy' vans were built from 1974-2003 in the old BMC/Austin-Morris van plant at Washwood Heath in Birmingham (previously the plant built Wolseley cars). I don't believe any were built outside of the UK. The name-changes and different owners mean that the vans have been sold as 'Leyland', 'Austin-Morris' and 'Freight-Rover'. Following this they became part of 'Leyland-DAF' then after a management-buyout they were 'LDV' Limited. I worked for a parts supplier for this range of vans from the initial design work in 1970 right up to 2003 when production finished. Some of the original parts were based on other vehicles, for example the Bedford CF van, and were therefore in continuous production for well over 30 years. On IMCDb they are listed currently as 'Leyland', 'Freight-Rover', Leyland-DAF' and 'LDV' (and 'DAF' I guess for export versions of 'Leyland-DAF'). In theory some of the 'Austin-Morris' badged vans could also be identified but I guess its simpler if they remain as 'Leyland'. -- Last edit: 2007-01-07 15:31:40 |

1988 is the oldest possibility for DAF (since late 1987). [V400]. |
