Most numberplates in the series are lousy fakes :)

This car reappears in many episodes, so there will be more pics of it.

I suppose that the number wouldn't have been readable on small 1960s televisions...

This Saint fansite has a page showing all the episodes this Mercedes appears in:

There's also a guide to the studio backlot, demonstrating how it was redressed to represent different places:

My guess is that the props man acquired it from the nearby US base at Ruislip, which was close in proximity to the Studios at Elstree. I remember reading in a book about this show that the property department frequently acquired vehicles for use in the show from the base. I assume that the vehicles were borrowed / rented. As the show was set in locals throughout the world, Ruislip would provide a good source for American and possibly in this case, an export LHD European model like this Mercedes. I know that a couple of episodes have American cars with a US Department of Defense parking label on the top of the driver side bumper.

In this episode, when the Mercedes meets the plane at the airport, it has blackwall tires, but in the scenes on the roads in "Switzerland" (roads around Elstree), it has wide whitewalls. At the airport, when it swings past the camera, the driver's door appears to have been painted a slightly off shade of green / aqua. This vehicle appears in "The Helpful Pirate" and "Locate and Destroy" color episodes, and I suspect is the same car that appears in black and white episodes "The King of the Beggars" and "The Death Penalty" (and some others that don't come to mind immediately. Many "guest cars" especially in the black and white episodes seem to have been used in a couple episodes, but because this car seems to appear so often, I would not be surprised if it was producer Robert S Baker's car....a total guess, however. A black VW Beetle appears frequently in the series and was actually Production Designer Johnny Goodman's vehicle, while Roger Moore of course used at least one of the Volvos as his personal transport....as his family was growing with wife and two kids by that time, I'm sure he had at least another car for the entire family.
