Was the car really called "Isetta of Great Britain 300" ? ![]() -- Last edit: 2005-12-16 18:54:30 |

Under suspicion? ![]() |

Somehow I knew you'd ask that! ![]() It is rather strange but true. The manufacturer was the 'Isetta of Great Britain Ltd.' in Brighton (where this film is located). As the BMW Isetta, which itself was based on the Iso Isetta, was commonly only known as Isetta (just like Beetle, Jeep, Goggomobil, Trabant -- people tend to forget that there is a maker name, too) the British licensee probably wanted to make it absolutely clear that it was a British car (well, sort of car). |

I think yes, but I have never seen any brochures or official documents. |

Wasn't, for tax-reasons, the Threewheeler-version mostly sold in the UK? |

Not sure if purchase tax rates were different for 3-wheelers, but they were treated as motorbikes for annual road tax (much cheaper) and could be driven on a motorbike driving licence - much easier to get than a car driving licence. Wonderful logic in government policy - let drivers who can't drive properly loose on the roads in cars that aren't proper cars - no problem. |

In Germany we had a similar logic ![]() And there were conversion-kits (a Goggomobil-engine) available for downsizing "Big Block"-powered cars like the NSU Prinz 4, Fiat 500 and 126. Surprinsingly for a long time- up to 1982/83 ![]() Hard to believe, but this early-50ies-makeshift /vehicle_100415-Fuldamobil-S-4-1950.html was made until 1969, too, also due this 250 ccm-rule. This rule was dropped just last year. So you only had to wait 60 years, until you are allowed to get a real car-drivers-license without taking extra driving school-lessons and making and extra driving test. |
