1981 Malibu (In movie, you can see a few moment the cluster gages. It's 1981 cluster with circular gages, not an "linear" speedometer, monted only on 1981 I believe, with this frond end, before the face lift like "small impala" with new headlights, turn signal and front grill) -- Last edit: 2006-01-20 20:31:23 |

Funny detail : This is two different cars look at front, driver side wheel ! On first car, a hubcap, classic. And after, it's a style wheel, like an alu or composite wheel. I never seen the driver change a flat tire during the movie ![]() And If I remember, the car made a looping and stop on the roof. And the bulldozer pass on car ... on wheels ![]() |
◊ 2006-02-12 19:31 |
I guess it just lost its hubcap ? ![]() But you are right for the last thing: the car ends on its roof, but much later it is again on its wheels. |
◊ 2006-02-13 09:44 |
No, it's a wheel. My 'Bu lose hubcap (probably robbed...) and under, you have a black, in steel wheel. And i guess, all Malibu as same.![]() (About paint : I wait nice days to re-paint this car. I bought this one as is ... ) -- Last edit: 2006-02-13 09:45:59 |

It`s the one and the same Freightliner that first knocks the car on it`s side and then knocks it over on it`s wheels. ![]() -- Last edit: 2006-03-24 10:21:20 |

It's a 1980. In 1981, Chevy removed the rear quarter windows on the sedans. http://www.autobooksbishko.com/products/stdImages/1757.jpeg -- Last edit: 2006-04-06 01:40:26 |

This car belongs to Curtis and Connie. It gets four stars as it is involved in two chases and is seen through out the movie. |

The one of my second parts is when Connie & Curt head for the truck stop, but the International Transtar Flatbed flips over their 1980 Malibu, The 1971 White-Freightliner hauling Miller beer puts it back on the ground, and at the It gets squashed by the Cat. |
◊ 2006-06-10 00:53 |
What's the International Transtar Flatbed? And may you please put a picture of it? |
◊ 2006-06-10 01:26 |
The Transtar flatbed looks just like the toiletpaper rig. ...Only with a flatbed trailer. ![]() |

I'm not sure, but I think that Malibu dash with the round gauges was an option all along. IIRC, the basic dash just had the strip speedo flanked by a fuel gauge on the left and a space for an optional clock on the right. But you could order the dash that had the round gauges. I think it was more common in Malibu Classics and Monte Carlos, and from 1981 onward they may have dropped that dash with the strip speedometer altogether. Anyway, for the speedometer shot on the 1980 Malibu used in Maximum Overdrive, it looks like they took the speedometer out of a police car or maybe a Monte Carlo SS, because a 1980 Malibu would only have an 85 mph speedometer, and I think this one went up to 125. However, a Monte SS or a police car would also have full gauges, for oil, temp, and amps, where this car just had idiot lights. I'd imagine that the camera shot they took for the dash closeups to show speed may have just been something that they threw together, and was not even in the car. As for the hubcaps on that Malibu, does anybody know what they're off of? They're definitely not '78-80 Malibu hubcaps, or '81-83 for that matter. As for that mis-matched front rim, it looks like one of those body-colored steel rally wheels that was popular in the late 70's and early 80's. Pontiac, Olds, Buick, and Cadillac all had their own style, where it was a painted steel wheel with some chrome trim, a chrome "beauty ring" (missing in this case) and chrome-tipped lugnuts. -- Last edit: 2006-06-12 20:02:16 |

I'me not sure round gage has been an option for 1983 models, and in my Malibu / montecarlo / Elcamino/ caprice shop manual, only round gaages is illustred. I confirm for 85 mph speedo, and "cornered" 3 parts dash, before, it's an "incuved" dash and linear speedo if I remember. On my 83 : ![]() It's a "corner" panel. Left vent and headligts, center cluster gages, rights idiots lights and not in standard an temp. gage, but rear defroster switch. -- Last edit: 2006-06-14 20:34:43 |

Thanks for that dash pic. That brings back some memories. I had a 1986 Monte Carlo for a few months back in 1998, that had that same dash. Although instead of the woodgrain it had black plastic. It was a great car, but I got t-boned delivering pizzas. My Mom had bought it new, gave it to me with 179,000 miles on it, and I got whacked three months later, at 192,000 miles, with its 305-4bbl still running strong! How does that wagon perform with the 305? My grandparents had an '82 Malibu Classic wagon, but it only had a 229-2bbl, and they hated it! Anyway, nice looking car! Too bad you're not in the United States. There's a big GM car show coming up next weekend in Carlisle, PA. Oh, and my first car was a 1980 Malibu coupe. One thing that pissed me off about "Maximum Overdrive" is that this poor 1980 Malibu that Curtis and Connie had was almost a glutton for punishment! First it gets rear-ended by that older Mack out on the highway. Then it gets flipped onto its roof. And then it gets smacked TWICE by that Miller truck! And then the bulldozer smashes it flat! It's almost like Stephen King was taking his anger out on that poor car in this movie! Interestingly, in the bad remake of this movie, "Trucks", they used a 1979 Malibu, a wagon this time, in roughly the same role. It got chased down on the road by an old medium duty F-series utility truck looking thing, and when they finally got to the truck stop, 3 or 4 trucks converged on it and smashed it and it blew up. It didn't get obliterated to quite the extent that the poor '80 in Maximum Overdrive did, though! |

That's a Chevy for ya... takes a beating and keeps going... at least until a Bulldozer squashes it! |

Did anyone else notice in the scene after the Mack truck chases them and blows up, they stop next to the Dixie Boy sign, and the rollbar of the stunt car is VERY visible? |

Common in stunts, sure. But this wasn't even a stunt...it was an interior shot. |
◊ 2006-12-07 22:31 |
ah yes, common too, sometimes in movies or TV series that uses the same car for the episode and for the stunt ![]() |

Bit late to the answer, but the aliens probably used semis and not normal cars (though we DO see several junked cars come to life but since they're junkers, they don't move) because semis are a lot bigger and can do more damage when hitting people, other vehicles, and buildings. You get hit by a car, you COULD get up and walk away to get help but get hit by a semi, you're not gonna get up that easy since it's a lot more mass hitting and running you over at roughly the same speed and if it doesn't kill you, it can circle around and get you again just like that. |
◊ 2021-06-17 01:36 |
For those of you who are wondering why this car doesn't come to life and do anything, it does. Let me explain, when it passes by the junk cars, they flash their headlights like they are signaling to the car, anyway the car shows that the gas gauge is almost empty, even though it has plenty of gas for a car chase and 1 mile to get to Dixie Boy truck stop. The car pretends to be empty to lure them to the gas station with the White 9000 to get them. I believe that the aliens can't really control the cars themselves but can control the electronics in them. |

![]() This is to answer anyone's question on how the Car was back on its wheels when the Bulldozer Crushed it |
◊ 2021-09-14 03:20 |
The aliens can only control anything powered by electricity, battery, or diesel. Gas doesn't count, BUT a cars lights and gauges are battery powered. That's why the junkers and the Malibu can fake their gauges and alternate their lights. No clue how the lawnmower works however. -- Last edit: 2021-12-22 18:59:58 |
