1984 made-for-TV biopic of Jesse Owens, the athlete who made history at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games by winning gold medals in the 100 meter dash, long jump, 200 meter dash, and 4 × 100-meter relay, not only making history but disproving Adolf Hitler's myth of Aryan supremacy. Despite these broad accomplishments, his home country was unfortunately unable to see past the colour of his skin and he was largely ignored after returning home, whereas the white American Olympians were showered with praise and glory. Not even President Franklin D. Roosevelt acknowledged his accomplishments. Fortunately as racial segregation waned and the Civil Rights movement came into play, Owens was recognized for his achievements and gained public praise, getting a spot in the National Track & Field Hall of Fame in 1970, and eventually being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Gerald R. Ford in 1976. President Jimmy Carter would also award Owens in 1979, with the Living Legend Award. Although Owens did not live to see the infamous 1980 Moscow Olympics, sadly passing away at only 66 from lung cancer in March of that year, he was aware of talks of boycotting the Games, an action which he wholeheartedly opposed, believing that politics has no place in the world of sports. Georg Stanford Brown, Debbi Morgan, LeVar Burton, and Ronny Cox.

This movie aired on July 9th, just weeks before the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics which hosted it's opening ceremony July 28th.

Not the first TV movie I've added about an African-American Olympic athlete. See Wilma.
