When pursuing a man who stole two cows from him, the chase crosses the county line where the titular murder occurs in Coweta County, outside the Sunset Tourist camp. This gets Sheriff Lamar Potts (played by music legend Johnny Cash!!!) on his case. Despite his best efforts to hide the evidence, including burning the body to ash and disposing of the cremains in a river, evidence and numerous witnesses, including those who had helped Wallace dispose of the body, conclusively proved that Wallace committed the murder. He was found guilty and sentence to death by the electric chair, his execution being carried out in 1950. Griffith and Cash are both amazing in this film! Cash nails his role as a soft-spoken yet intimidating, take-no-nonsense sheriff and Griffith's performance is so convincing that he can have you laughing with him one moment and then fearing what he's about to do the next.
