1966 BBC docu-drama directed by Ken Loach and probably his first film attack on social inequality. "A 1998 Radio Times poll voted it the best single television drama and a 2000 industry poll rated it as the 2nd best British TV programme ever made. Filmed in a gritty, realistic drama documentary style, it was first broadcast on 16 November 1966 on BBC1, in the The Wednesday Play series which often tackled social issues, and was watched by 12 million people – a quarter of the British population at the time." Shown recently on BBC4 in a Ken Loach tribute night with a very good quality restoration, but I could only get a fuzzier copy, so small picture captures and had to read some of the registrations etc off the TV screen. Although a great director, Ken didn't quite grasp the need to capture cars properly, so lots more stuff shown badly/blurred/obliquely or to briefly to capture usefully. Nothing too exciting as far as I could make out - a possible Austin Gypsy (cabin inside and outside shots) at 43-30 just before the Triumph Courier was the probable highlight. A lot of 1930s to 1950s derelicts dumped around the caravan site in the same segment, but seemed a fairly typical mixture. Rejects - street with split-window Minor van and A40 pick-up approaching - 100E Popular, dead Minx S1/S2, Cresta PA -- Last edit: 2016-08-17 20:33:20 |
