The train is the Golden Arrow, a boat train that ran from London Victoria to Dover to connect to a ferry to Calais.

At Calais, passengers boarded the Flèche d'Or to Gare du Nord in Paris.

The train is in the charge of a Bulleid Pacific in its unrebuilt state, unfortunately the picture is not very clear so I cannot identify which one. Known to the members of the sooty linesiders as "Spam Cans", they were very powerful, but quite light. The airsmoothed casing was removed from many of the locomotives in the latter years, they looked much more conventional afterwards.

There were three classes of these locomotives, one named after shipping lines, (Merchant Navy class), one after West Country features, and one after Battle of Britain noteables, the latter two classes being of even lighter construction.

A total of 140 of these locomotives was built, featuring chain driven valve gear, and much welded construction.

O.V.S. Bulleid, the design chief of the Southern Railway, lived from 1882 to 1970.
