![]() 1958 supernatural sports comedy musical about a middle-aged fan of the Washington Senators baseball team who, tired of the team's losing streak, makes a deal with the devil that turns him into a young athlete played by Tab Hunter in order to turn the team around! A very good film with decent musical numbers, although most of the song-and-dance routines look more like they're from a filmed stage play than an actual motion picture as they're filmed on a closed set rather than on-location like Take Me Out To The Ball Game. Star Gwen Verdon shares this criticism, saying, "I don’t think it looks like a movie... I think it looks like a stage show, which is not good. And I’m sure Stanley [Donen, director of motion pictures], who had done great movies, did not want to shoot it that way, but he did it out of deference to George [Abbott, theatre director]." Starring Robert Shafter, Tab Hunter, Gwen Verdon, and Ray Walston! |
