Of Andrew L. Stone and his wife Virginia, I only knew the almost abysmal The Steel Trap. This one, is much much better. It's the story of two war acquaintances, one a would-be genius of crime, Paul Hoplin (Rod Steiger), ready to hide remote-controlled bombs in air-liner and to collect extorsion money not to make them explode, and the other, Jim Molner (James Mason), inadvertantly trapped in the making of the bomb, then kidnapped, him and his family—wife Joan (Inger Stevens) and kid daughter Pat—to serve as guarantee and instruments in the collecting of ransom. It's partly a police procedural (from the very start, we begin in the offices of the "20th Century Airlines", at the reception of the blackmail letter announcing a bomb is on a plane), partly the two-voiced narration of the events (we have Mason's and Stevens' voices over some sequences). And if the investigation part is pure routine (with big voices of big reponsible men absolutely clichéed) and tepid (and in times unvolutarily funny), the rest is very good (besides some far-fetched or redundant moments, most of them involving Mason's character). Good because of the story and the care for details in Hoplin's plans, good for the pace and the touch of 'real time action' (these almost 11 minutes at the wheel of the Chrysler, with Inger Stevens really fighting her way through the traffic would be a treat for you all, guys!), and good for the interpretation: Angie Dickinson count here for very few, Jack Klugman is nothing much more than a silhouette but, boy, Neville Brand! This creep is frightening! Mrs. Molner wouldn't deny, would you, sweet Inger? (Anyway, the guy will learn the hard way not to mess with the Joan.) And Rod Steiger is simply great here: giving a superlative performance. Two great villains aren't enough. There is a great victim in Inger Stevens, living her role with all it takes to make you root for her and suffer for her. Inger Stevens est vraiment formidable dans ce petit film qui en devient grand, probablement le meilleur fait par le couple Andrew L. et Virginia Stone. Eh, les gars, y a l'micro dans le champ ! Inger gave me my first appreciation for blondes. She also drove a lot in her episode for the Twilight Zone. |
