Superb 30-year old BBC TV movie from the Screen Two collection (S9 ep03) dragged from the vaults and shown on BBC4 a couple of nights ago. An elderly couple leave their Skye croft to make a final farewell trip to their five children and families dotted around Britain (Glasgow, Liverpool, Peterborough, London) as the mother is dying. A sharp throwback to an era when the BBC produced excellent dramas where the power of the story was amplified by subtlety and understatement rather than exaggeration and flamboyance. There's a lot of social commentary about the state of the nation in the early 1990s, but it's used as a backcloth for what is basically a love story. Superbly acted by the main characters to give a genuine warmth to the inevitable ending. Highly recommended. Rejects: - assorted Sierras - Disco and Audi(?) hatch |
