What helps here to differentiate a 1971+ AM General model from a 1963+ Kaiser-Jeep truck or even from a 1950+ Reo one? |

Cruelle question. Though possible reference sites evoked them (Olive drab, en.wiki), the M-35 story —and its variants' A1, A2— is not well known of us. The notable exception being 1994 AM General M-35 A3, with its characteristic face. All the reste is named and dated (when dated) rather hapazardly here (many "1955" I still can't understand, for instance), though we can see noticeable differences between the trucks (the most blatant being the position of the headlights). It seems we lack a solid and definitive reference book or umpire. |

I'm (more or less) sure about the dates: • Reo made the first vehicles (1950+); • Kaiser-Jeep make name appeared in 1963 only, so no models with this make before that; • The Defense and Government Products Division of Kaiser-Jeep became AM General in April 1971 (same link): no KJ models after 1971 nor AM-G trucks before 1971. The only unknown part for me in this time-line is the switch between Reo and Kaiser-Jeep: Reo's vehicle manufacturing operations were sold in 1954, the make became a subsidiary of White in 1957 and was merged with Diamond T Trucks in 1967 (source: Wikipedia). Did Reo make these trucks until 1963 or until 1967? Or was it just 1950-54? But if we assume that Kaiser-Jeep started the production in 1963 and not some years later, which make made the trucks between 1954 and 1963, in the latter case? As you say, a solid source is needed ![]() -- Last edit: 2015-11-20 19:37:05 |
