This one is not GAZ, it's ZAZ 965 !

antp BE

2005-08-03 20:51

It is listed as Gaz Economy on lots of sites, what makes you think it is a Zaz ?

damn_angel

2005-08-04 17:04

Cause my parents had one 15 years ago. And there are still some for sale now.
I live next to Russia. Afterwards my parents bought ZAZ 966 and 968 (none of them listed here).

Well, when I google for "GAZ Economy" I see a car similair to this one too :D

It really is ZAZ 965. Pls note, that the name ZAZ was USSR "external" brand-name. Inside USSR it had name "запорожец" [tsaporodjets].

2005-10-06 21:02

That's true, and I would add that ZAZ had also made a model very similar to NSU 1000..don't remember what number it had ?...maybe "antonr" could say what about it?

DAF555 SE

2005-10-06 21:06

On some markets it is known as Jalta 965, but they are all the same as far as I know. The NSU lookalikes are the ZAZ 966 and 968 models that antonr mentions above

If they had also copied the engine of the 600 too.
What I've heard stories from the old motorists, that V4 engine was a real nightmare.

Interesting. I can't see an even passing resemblance to a Fiat 600 in this car. Also, not a single technical design element is even remotely similar between the two, apart from that they both have four wheels and the engine in the back.

hm. well, they would not match, if you put them on layers and compare.

but its a layout of the same category:
http://www.van.at/flame/flame03/set02/b275.htm

like a zaporoshec 968 does not really match with an NSU, but they are like cousins out of two hemispheres.

of course a balkan boy and a baltic boy is not the same, and an italian is quite different ...

Never heard of any licences between ZAZ and FIAT. The prototypes of the 965 were different in design and totally different from Fiat-600. Later Zaporozhets designers modified the car and it looks how it is. (It is actually a "facelifted" version of 965 and has and index 965A, but its not improtant) :) Cheers

On an Italian encyclopaedia was reported that the prototype of ZAZ 965 was nicknamed internally as"Volkswagen Fiatovich Zaporozhets",approximatively in Russian"Zaporoshets son of Fiat(for copied shape, but if ZAZ don't had technical ties with Fiat)and Volkswagen(for the boxer engine of prototype--patterned on that of Beetle--,replaced by a V-4 engine on stock-made article)"

PS 1962 to 1966 for 965 A

Jack Wade hits his car's engine (which has stalled) with a sledgehammer and it starts moving again. It wouldn't start moving like that if it stopped for any reason. Someone would need to be in the car holding the key to "start" for it to restart. James and Jack are both working on the car (outside) so it wouldn't start at all.

No, it was a probably a reliable car that was made to look like crap. Film crews can't afford to wait around for hours if a car breaks down.

Anyway, there were probably two cars, one for driving and one for the sledgehammer scene.

^ Compared against what? If your only choice was between one of these and legging it everywhere, what would your view be then? Having driven many, many cars dating back as far as the 1930s, I have to tell you there are no certainties, only comparisons. If you had 100 miles to go and only enough fuel to get there in this, and half way there in a Moskvitch, what would be your choice then?

And, boy, don’t tell me what to think.
