1993 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer. You can tell it is an Eddie Bauer edition car because of bumper and grill diferences from the XLT and XLS models. And running boards were only availible on XLT and Eddie Bauer models and the XLT model had a a smaller bumper. And for those of you who do not know what I am talking about, Ford Explorers ( and not just Explorers but F series pickups, Escapes, Expeditions and other trucks and SUVs) have models. XLS is the third class or base model, XLT is the second class model which has all the XLS features and more and before the 1994 introduction of the Limited luxury model, the fancy model was the Eddie Bauer signiture series cars. With interiors designed by or taken from the interior designer, Eddie Bauer, it was the luxury or fancy edition which had XLS and XLT features including many of its own and many options to choose from too. Ford Explorer replaced the aged Ford Bronco and Bronco II. |

When the T-Rex is about to come out onto the road it shows a close-up of the back of the Explorer next to the fence and you can read out "Explorer XLT." |

I have to admit, if I ever bought a first-generation Explorer, I'd be very tempted to put that plexiglass roof on. |
◊ 2006-10-28 19:12 |
Does this really deserve 4 stars? I mean, it was used only in the tour and the t-rex scene. |
◊ 2006-10-29 00:08 |
The scenes with the cars are somewhat long, the car is really well seen and well featured in the movie. I think that its role is important enough to justify 4 stars. -- Last edit: 2006-10-29 00:10:14 |

Yes, this deserves four stars because this car's scenes are well remembered. |

By the way, Gliffhanger, if you have the DVD of a film and you want to replace the pictures, feel free to use a still from another moment in the film if you feel it gives a better view of the vehicle. |
◊ 2007-01-02 16:52 |
These cars were pretty heavily customized, as well as the "driverless" feature and the plexiglass roofs they also had touch-screen computer monitors inside as an interactive information feature for the Tour. In the novel the Tour cars were actually written as Toyota Land Cruisers, but, probably due to product placement, the studio decided to use Ford Explorers, which serve the film just as well. Definetely 4 star vehicles, since they feature in the unforgettable T-Rex attack scene. I always liked the paint jobs on these, when I was a kid I loved this film and I painted some of my die-cast toy cars with the same livery as these so they'd look like Jurassic Park cars. |
◊ 2007-01-02 16:56 |
They also used the Ford Explorers’ because Steven Spielberg owned one at the time of the movies’ filming and he liked the vehicle. Go figure… |
◊ 2007-01-02 17:05 |
Now I hear he's a Lexus fan, and drives an LX470 (a rebadged Toyota Land Cruiser), and that's why there was a futuristic Lexus in Minority Report. Mind you if I had his money (the man's a billionaire), I'd have something a little more exquisite, but then maybe he does have some other nice cars in his garage. -- Last edit: 2007-01-02 17:06:30 |

Just a little tid bit. I noticed somebody above mentioned that the Explorers are Eddie Bauer edition models. They are not. If you look closely at the picture showing the rear hatch you can see the badge that says XLT directly below the "Explorer" nameplate. It is also much clearer in the movie. It does seem to have a Eddie Bauer grille. I believe this is why he was confused. Eddie Bauers came with painted grilles, XLT's came with chrome plated plastic grilles. It is likely they switched these out to allow the grille to be painted with the "Jurassic Camo" pattern. -- Last edit: 2007-07-27 07:42:53 |
◊ 2007-07-28 01:08 |
Sorry, but the Eddie Bauer Explorers’ never came with body color keyed grilles. Only the Limited Editions had body color keyed grilles (And the grilles equipped on the Jurassic Park Tours, Ford Explorers’ were the XLT and Eddie Bauer trim Chromed ones) |
◊ 2007-07-28 06:11 |
I stand corrected. He is right, I was mistaken. Eddie Bauers shared the same grill (chromed plastic) with the XLT. I forgot about the Limiteds. But never the less, the Explorers in the movie were XLT's. |

They are not visible or used for so long, to me they'd deserve just three stars |
◊ 2008-01-14 21:01 |
by the way, wich scenes are the ones where the cars are computer generated? 'cause i can't see...i mean, is very good, i can't see when is a real car and when is a CGI. the 4 stars are deserved to me, at least the whole t-rex breakout is a classic cinema scene...and the cars are part of that scene. also, the cars appears since they start the jurassic park tour till the t-rex escape... -- Last edit: 2008-01-14 21:04:49 |

As I said in the first comments of the page: Role is big, they are well visible and well used for some time, car is well known and a symbol of the movie as there were also toys etc. with it (not big enough for 5 stars, but they deserve 4). -- Last edit: 2008-01-14 23:04:14 |
◊ 2008-01-14 23:08 |
The T-Rex scene is not as long to make them deserve four stars at all, the roll isnt big at all either and since when well visible means four stars? and the car is in the movei but not necesarily a symbol. And about CGI, i think it could be the fall scene, anyway it seemed a real car to me even on that bit, so no idea. |
◊ 2008-01-14 23:09 |
There isn't only the t-rex scene, there are scenes before that. |
◊ 2008-01-14 23:13 |
Not many to make it deserve 4 stars at all, but well it doesnt matter. |
◊ 2008-01-15 00:35 |
Well, I would agree that they deserve four stars also. The fact is that these vehicles are now synonymous with the movie. Everyone knows about them. A wrecked one is even featured at the Jurassic Park ride in Universal Studios California, although I'm not sure if it's one of the original movie Explorers. |
◊ 2008-01-15 03:17 |
in fact this is one of the pics from universal studios http://img117.imageshack.us/my.php?image=447481661f8fcfffa84fj2.jpg yes, i know that, i've seen a few pics on www.flickr.com where appears a wrecked one as i know, only the third of the movies feature a wrecked explorer...so, is all we have about it. and yes, deserve 4 stars. i wish i have one of those and ride around my city, it will be cool some people will call me a freak fan of the movie lol i must confess when i was child and i saw the movie at first time i have no idea what to expect, and after watch the movie i became a fan....and my first though was draw the tour cars(yes, the ford explorer's), so this movie change my life in some ways... after the movie i really start to love the car design...all happen after watch the movie. so, a movie can change your points of view. in my experience, this movie gave me inspiration to create new cars and also dream about new trips... ok, i know this is not a forum but i must share this with everybody. that's why i love so much the movie. -- Last edit: 2008-01-15 03:26:39 |

◊ 2008-02-15 03:06 |
Why would you want to marry a car though? |
◊ 2008-02-16 02:00 |
as wierd as that sounds....i like it that much |
◊ 2008-03-19 19:35 |
Same here dude, but I wouldn't marry the car, but I would buy a 1991-1994 ford explorer, with RWD, XLT trim, and I'd customise it to look identicle to this one, it would have every thing that this one has, only the OEM dash, engine, exhaust, gas, brake, and parking brake pedals, and not to mention the plexiglass roof, all because this this ford explorer is the bomb, and I like it, just too much. And this truck is a 1991-1992, heres why, because the 1991-1992 steering wheel is shown on some scenes in the movie, 1993-1994 models had a newer design steering wheel, and this one is an XLT, because it has the XLT bumpers, and clearly says "Explorer XLT" on the back, in some scenes. |
◊ 2008-03-23 20:42 |
yes, is a XLT and 1992 model that's true 'cause the movie was made during 1992. please, if u can buy that explorer and customize it like this one, post the pics on this thread(or maybe on the forum a special thread) u dont know how many times i want to customize the explorer like the one on the movie...but i dont have that 4x4 yet...and money to spend xd |

I will after college, I dont have the cash to do it yet, nor do I have a job, sorry it took so long to reply, been very busy on you tube a lot, and landrover1 is right, this is a 1992 XLT, and everything on this truck looks original, not custom, i'm thinking that they had them made special by the assembly plant, it looks just like everything is from the assembly plant, and not aftermarket. |

I've noticed you guy talk a lot about building a replica of one of these awesome trucks. I've decided to take on this challenge myself. I'm starting out small with a 1:24 scale 1992 Ford Explorer bu Maisto and may one day work up to 1:1. With a little luck and a lot of help from John Spangler, it should look a little like this: http://www.johnspangler.com/models/jurassicford/jurassicford.html |
◊ 2009-09-15 09:32 |
These are 92's or 91's. Movie was done filming before the 93's were released. The interiors are also consistent with 91/92 models. |
◊ 2009-10-04 05:24 |
These Explorers are awesome and ever since I saw this movie when I was little i've always wanted to custom make an exact replica. It shouldn't be that hard, and thankfully Explorers aren't that expensive. I saw one that was good running for 800$! All that has to be done is the paint job, the roof which should be relatively easy and any body shop/auto fabricator to do and bam. How much fun would that be to drive around!? |
◊ 2010-03-23 01:21 |
This is something I've thought out well in advance. I'd hate to be a kill joy, but it's not as simple as cutting a hole in the roof and slapping a pretty dome in it. First of all, glass domes for this purpose aren't exactly in high demand. You'd have to make your own and fit it into the hole in the roof. But it doesn't end there. You still need to seal the dome or you'll end up driving a motorized swimming pool. Once you get past this obstacle, the rest is a question of finding the right parts. If you're really serious about this, I wish you the best of luck. I'd love to have one, too. |

Wait a minute, I thought the current Explorers also have a V8. |
◊ 2011-03-23 19:43 |
U251 had both V6 and V8 engines. The new (2011) U502 is V6 only, for now. A 2.0 EcoBoost I4 engine is on its way, available late this year. The V6 makes the about the same power as the old V8, and is less thirsty. Some die-hard Explorer fans are upset there will not be a V8 for the new Explorer. But looking back, the first generation Explorers (the ones used here in Jurassic Park) were only offered with a V6. There wasn’t a V8 offered. |

Both of them are displayed outside a Jurassic Park ride at a theme park in Florida (Universal I think?). One of them is in great condition. The other one that was flipped over and crushed by the T-Rex seems to have had the roof replaced and then been cut in half. Tomica's die cast version, weirdly referred to as "Jurassic World Tour Vehicle," which is proportionally better than Matchbox's but messes up by not having yellow hubcaps. Both versions are a weird combination of slightly right/slightly wrong so that neither can be the definitive Explorer tour vehicle in this scale. -- Last edit: 2020-01-04 08:06:38 |
