This looks as if it's RHD. Was the Fox ever made in RHD?

No. And since the movie was reportedly filmed in SA, this must be a Passat.

Were the Passat's, sold on the South African market, made in Brazil? Not by the VW-factory in Uitenhage? :??:

We have some US-style Dasher/Fox Wagon's here, but sold in the UK under this name - so RHD, too. They were made in the VW-factory in Emden/Germany and not in Brazil. Strange, but indeed, for a while Dasher/Fox Wagon and Passat Variant were sold parallel in Britain.

If it's really an Euopean made one, it's a 1977-model. In 1978 they got the new plastic-front.

The post-1977 South African Passats used Audi 80 front styling, as did their Brazilian cousins. Both four-round and two-rectangular headlight themes were used, depending on the model.

This one is the PassatI, made in ZA, but simular to the brazilian Passat with the Audi 80 front look.

- yep, because the Brazilian Passat Mk1 was never assembled as Station wagon (Variant), but the south african Passat Mk1 was - and also the south african Audi 80 - brochure pic and a pic found on gumtree.za [Image: passatlsandgldieselvariant.jpg] [Image: passatglsvariant-1980-4b.jpg] - and the south african version got the Audi Front already in 1977 but with the smaller steel bumpers first - the bumpers of the shown cars are introduced in 1979, parallel to the introduction of the brazilian Passat facelift.

[Image: passat16gls-1979-1.jpg][Image: passat1600gls-1979-3.jpg][Image: passat1600gls-1979-2.jpg] - and here are some pics of south african Passat Sedans of 1978/79: Already with the Audi front styling grille but with smaller bumpers - and attention to the facelift back as known from the european Passat after 1977 - but never from the brazilian one!

Any pics from the interior? On the Wagon-pic it seems, that it has the old, pre-1978 dashboard.

 Any survivors known? At my ZA-trip in 2002, I haven't seen any older (early 80ies or older) VW or Audi, although their production numbers weren't really low.

[Image: passat16gls-1979-3.jpg][Image: passatglsdash1980.jpg] - here is an interior pic of the red sedan and a 1979 brochure pic, indeed with the old style dashboard - and I have found out, that also the european RHD version for UK and Ireland kept the old dashboard styling after 1977 - and the online marketplace gumtree.co.za is a good web source for finding surviving 1970s south african Passats.

ah, yes, the old dashboard - with the always same problem, EVERY Passat I and Audi 80 B1 has - it bursts along the loudspeaker-holes. The VW longnose-Type3 has the same problem. The K 70 fortunately not, as its dashboard is made from a harder material.
