not really, that was most often to see in the 70s, those cars used to be carried with so much baggage when they goes to vacation

Back then, in the times, where every car had a real gutter, you could use one roof rack for a plenty of cars. Today you have to by a specific rack for ever car. And back then the higher fuel consumption due these racks wasn't a reason for discussing.
Unfortunately I cannot find the 1980ies "Der 7.Sinn"-crashes with them :(
