Based on the autobiography of 1940s "Red Light Bandit" Caryl Chessman, who was executed at San Quentin in 1960. Lots of great stunt driving in this movie, rather unusual for the 1950s, and one of William Campbell's best bad-guy roles (his brother Robert plays the younger version of the character).
