Wasn't 'AC' one of those weird license plate prefixes they were issuing to US Forces in Germany for a while?? (Like "QQ" and "HK" were? I was long gone from there by the time those came out?) |

No, they were 'AD' and 'AF'. 'AC' is Aachen. The other one was 'HK', which nowadays indicates the plates from Landkreis Heidekreis. Other military plates for US Forces were 'QQ' and 'IF'. From 2005 on they use the normal plates of the Landkreis where they are located in due to safety reasons, except from the 'IF' plates for US military police vehicles. |

Looks like 1996+ roof antenna (for GT and above) and 1997+ 'Golf' badge without trim (for the regular range, special editions had both earlier). Pretty sure the Special wasn't offered in this color, which makes this a 1997 Trendline in 'canyonred'. For 1997 the Trendline/neé GT lost the black plastic arches and mirrors and sidetrim became body-colored. 96: Link to "i.pinimg.com" 97: http://pics.imcdb.org/16833/s-l1600.4.jpg |
