Entered as Mercedes Simplex 40/45 Tourer to sit with others. But the following noted in case it can be given a better ID:

"From 1905, the word "Simplex" was omitted from the model designation; the 28/32 hp was renamed into 35 hp model and the 40/45 hp into 45 hp model. In 1908, the 55 hp and 70 hp models, which were similar in design to the 45 hp model, were added to the sales range." - Link to "mercedes-benz-publicarchive.com"

"Mercedes-Simplex 40/45 hp, Mercedes 45 hp, 26/45 hp" page heading from same site - Link to "mercedes-benz-publicarchive.com"

Name seems to depend a lot on the year - how solid is 1909??

My dating thoughts are taken grom the shape of the coachwork. The car has a rounded scuttle and has a front door which is sloping down rearward. Prior to c1909 the scuttles were straight with upright flatish windscreen and generally no front door. Soon after the dors were 'normal' enclosed tourer type with a smooth bodyline, and shortly after the rads were spitzkuhlers. Electrics seem to come in cca 1908. My thoughts on the exact model were confirmed by a picture of a Mercedes named as a Simplex at http://www.conceptcarz.com/view/photo/194216,13537,0,0/photo.aspx .Note the error on the title of the photo as a Mercedes Benz...which it obviously was not as the merger with Benz did not occur until 1926 !?! Wikipedia suggests the car was called a Merceds Simplex to 1909.
