Commentary refers to taxi drivers becoming "godfathers" to fire pumps. Which probably also explains the ladders on taxi roof. |

"several thousand taxi drivers have, with their vehicles, joined the auxiliary fire service. These particularly mobile machines have rapidly been converted to trail self-contained fire pumps of efficient types." This was in September 1939 and by March 1940 these were being released back to taxi usage as the AFS was able to meet London's needs and I guess the worst of the blitz bombing was over. |
