These little cars could be tweaked from the stock 100hp to 125hp with just a change in exhaust. Next, switching out the carburetor for two weber 36DCD's got you to 155hp and 6.x seconds 0-60 instead of 9.x seconds stock. The difference was outrageous, the total cost for these changes was about $1000. In the 1980's that was great performance for anything but a Corvette, V8 pony car, or exotic. The RX-7's rear wheel drive with a limited slip differential from a later model made tire abuse fun! The suspension was primitive so handling was probably worse than the car's looks implied. |
