My period paper source says that Astra Mk III and Vectra Mk I were still made in UK (well Astra still is). There were also imports from other GM plants? Production of Vauxhall Astra is not mentioned in description of German and Belgian Opel plants, but my informations can be not 100% accurate in case of the 2nd one. |

Europe-wide production of both the Vauxhall/Opel RHD/LHD T-Car (Astras) was commonplace, and not based on home-markets. Production of the Vauxhall Astra was not unusual in the Opel plants, as was Opels in the Ellesmere Port Plant, UK. Likewise the Vauxhall Luton UK production (J-car) was supplemented by imports from Opel plants, until Luton's plant closed for passenger car production. |

Yes, the Vauxhall- and RHD-version was definitely also built in Bochum, about Antwerpen I'm not sure. And yes, there was a daily shipping between the different GM-plants in Europe. I already told you about the car-trucks with Silesian plates, delivering Astras and Zafiras from the Gliwice-plant to an Opel-dealer vice-versa of the Bochum-plant. Then the trucks made a turn around the block, picked up other Astra and Zafiras - and went back to Poland. Once the father of a friend -working in the Bochum-plant for over 30 years- has ordered an Astra as a private car for employee-conditions. When he got it, he saw by the VIN-number, that this car was built in Ellesmere Port. -- Last edit: 2016-01-10 17:31:46 |

Yes, but it was already in the 2000s and the Astra was H IIRC, so the one which in Poland was made only as sedan (and it was the only place where sedan was made) and as Zafira. Anyway in case of latest generations it is more easy to tell where the car was made by the body type (I mean the main plants and not CKD/SKD assembly ones). Anyone else think there's a difference??? |
