If one have a look at the second thumbnail, it's possible to see that it doesnt have much chrome on the door frames and between the front window and the front door. Hence it's a [W 108] and not a [W 109]. The next question is what model of the [W 108]. It has bigger squares in the grill, chunky door mirrors and hub caps covering the whole wheel. Hence it's a 1968+ MY. Perhaps not that strange as the extended version of the [W 108] was introduced in 1968 http://wiki.mercedes-benz-classic.com/index.php/Kategorie:W108/W109 . Versions possible are: 1968-71 Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL (8.250 made), 1971-72 Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL 3.5 (951 made) and 1971-72 Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL 4.5 (8.173 made). One of the most frequent complains Mercedes got in the U.S. was the lack of power when comparing with (sometimes cheaper) full size American V8 models. Because of that the I6 280 SEL is rather unlikely especially if a later MY. The reason for that is that U.S. legislation for exhaust emissions removed much power, and it was even decided that the 3.5 litre V8 wasn't powerful enough and thus a 4.5 litre V8 was made almost entirely for the U.S.market. And proved rather successful. I believe this is likely a 1971-72 Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL 4.5. Is there much interior photos that could be used for further identification? Just to clarify; this is not any [W 108] unknown, but a 280 SEL. What is unknown is if has any additional numbers after the 280 SEL identifying a V8 fitted. |
