About the possible short wheelbases of the Series I models, Wikipedia says: 1948-53: 80"/2.03 m 1954-56: 86"/2.18 m 1957-58: 88"/2.23 m From what I understand from this page (thanks, Sandie): the tapered door and headlamps behind the metal grill indicate here most likely an early 1948-53 model, meaning a 80" wheelbase. ⇒ 1948 Land Rover 80" Series I? |

A left hand drive Land Rover was displayed at the Amsterdam Motor Show unveiling of the vehicle, 30th April 1948. The National Institute of Agricultural Engineering and Scottish Machinery Testing Station carried out a long term (9 month) test of two Land Rovers, chassis no R32, and Chassis no L33 (LHD) reporting results in a document RT.1/49034 dated 27 August 1949. Page 16 of "Land Rover - The Unbeatable 4 X 4" - Second edition 1984, has a picture of a 1948 80 inch vehicle with LHD. So it seems you can say that there have been LHD Land Rovers ever since they decided not to put the steering wheel in the centre. After all, one of the main aims of the project was to obtain foreign exchange for Sir Stafford Cripps. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stafford_Cripps -- Last edit: 2015-10-31 13:19:55 |
