Worth noting that the one above shows a straight, thin C-pillar instead.

The design of a 45-meter retractable mechanical aerial ladder began in the USSR in the late 1930s. However, the work was completed only after the end of the war. The work was assigned to two design bureaus - from Balashikha and Torzhok. In 1954, state tests of two aerial ladder models were conducted. The ladder from the Novotorzhok Machine-Building Plant was recommended for production. It received the index ALM-45 (200) LB.
The ALM-45 (200) LB was created on the MAZ-200 chassis. The wheelbase was increased by more than a meter - up to 5770 mm. A large four-door cabin of our own design was installed on the chassis. The second row of seats was located in it against the direction of the car. Interestingly, the emblems of the Minsk Automobile Plant in Torzhok were replaced with their own - the letters "NZ".

A rotating removable mechanical ladder was installed on the platform behind the cabin. It was driven by a cardan transmission from the vehicle's gearbox. The ladder itself consisted of six knees plus one additional one. With it, the lifting height reached 47 meters, and the maximum reach was 14 m. The lifting capacity of the elevator was 150 kg. In the working position, the aerial ladder was fixed on four support spindles.

The vehicle was equipped with a PN-45 fire pump. It was located in the rear overhang. Thus, the ALM-45 was used not only to rescue people, but also directly for firefighting. Water could be supplied by a pump either to a monitor nozzle or to a hose line that was not connected to the ladder.

Surprisingly, by the time the ALM-45 was created in the USSR, buildings of suitable height (more than 8 floors) were rare. Therefore, the 32-meter version of the ladder became more popular. It was installed on the same chassis. Nevertheless, the ALM-45 can rightfully be considered a significant success of the Soviet design school.

Quote Prototype ALM-45(200), model LD
Year of production: 1957-1960
The predecessor of the ALM-45(200)-LD, the LB model , caused a number of serious complaints from the very beginning of its production. They concerned both design solutions and operational qualities, as well as the reliability of units and mechanisms. Defective parts led to serious breakdowns. And some new ladders were not even put into operation. Work to correct this situation led to the creation of a modernized machine with the index "LD". The main design change was a 500 mm reduction in the wheelbase of the MAZ-200 chassis. This improved the maneuverability of the fire truck. In addition, the wooden platform and compartment doors became all-metal, a new design of emergency elevator catchers was used. The lifting capacity of the elevator increased from 250 to 325 kg.
