Sorry Porsche fans, but the main (and only this time round) car that Jeremy destroys in this release is the Porsche 911. It suffers continual abuse, such as having a piano dropped on it, being shot at, and even driving it into a building with Clarkson still in it. He declares that it is very strong because it is German, and therefore hard to kill - at the end he resolves this by dropping it onto a caravan.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() -- Last edit: 2006-12-05 11:31:45 |

Clarkson has never really warmed to the Porsche, he can't give any good reasons, it just seems to make him irrational (maybe he once lost a girlfriend to a Porsche driver). He still has respect for the more recent examples since they are extremely capable performance cars, but he'd never have one himself. |

Im a FAN of the nine eleven too specially the old one and yes i hate what he did to this one... |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I feel really sorry for one of my favourite Porsche! I hate this kind of destruction. |

Don't be such crybabies! This was an old Porsche anyway, plenty where that came from. |
◊ 2006-12-05 17:30 |
This may have been one that had reached the end of it's natural life, so at least it went out with a bang! I don't think he drove it on the public road, if I remember, although I stand corected if he did. |

I wish they would film wrecks as they usually happen, just crunch with no huge fire, explosions, flying through the air, etc. This one is obviously on fire before it even hits the van. |

Ah I just knew it would provoke this sort of reaction, like the Corvette in his last release. Interestingly, and this can be found in Clarksons Top 100 Cars, he holds the newer Porsche 911s very highly, even placing it as the second best car...even this Porsche 911 was in the list, albeit near the bottom. |

An early 80's british plate on a pre-1974 Porsche ? Strange. |
◊ 2006-12-05 23:43 |
tasteless Clarkson isn't a true car enthusiast and therefore his opinions are utterly useless |
◊ 2006-12-06 00:53 |
I agree and think the early small bumper (pre 1973) 911's are much more of a 'pure' sports car, better looking + lighter. If he's going to destroy one for effect, I'd much rather it be one of the later big-bumper ones as they're much less attractive to my eyes. |

I dunno, it's easy to point at this as worthless or wrong, but I kind of like this clip. I mean, I'd rather the Porsche wasn't killed, but at the same time, it's still entertaining. Besides, all throughout the clip, there's an undertone of respect, that Clarkson doesn't like 911s, but he doesn't genuinely believe they're bad cars (hell, the whole clip revolves around how hard it is to kill the thing). |

Clarkson is an idiot sometimes but he always redeems himself by making us laugh. |
◊ 2007-09-23 23:14 |
Actually it isn't. It's definitely not on fire when's it dropped, it only catches fire when it lands on the caravan. |

I don't know if it's fair to say Clarkson isn't a true car enthusiast, of course he is, he's devoted his career to looking at cars, he truly loves them. It would be more accurate to say that he isn't a true car expert, he's probably doesn't even know that much about how an engine works, but then how many film critics know exactly what it's like to make a film? Clarkson is a critic, he uses his experience of driving different cars to judge a new car, whether or not he knows how a car works (or how good a driver he is) is irrelevant to his work, he's a motoring journalist (or used to be), his reviews are aimed at the consumers, most of whom don't know and don't care how a car works. Even if Clarkson doesn't know more about cars than some members of this site, I'll bet he's driven more cars and a much wider range of vehicles than anyone here, it's his job. Other Top Gear presenters have been more knowledgable about cars (Quentin Willson) or been better drivers (Tiff Needell, Vicki Butler-Henderson). However, to me at least, some of Clarkson's opinions are still worth something. What is a true car enthusiast? Isn't it enough to have an enduring love of cars? Maybe not. -- Last edit: 2007-09-24 17:26:45 |

As G-MANN says, Clarkson is a critic. The job of a critic - whether of books, films, art, sport or cars - is to give his opinion of the product in a readable/watchable, entertaining manner, which to my mind Clarkson does admirably. You don't have to agree with him, after all; and he has prejudices, just as we probably all have, but Top Gear to my mind is a damn sight more entertaining than, for example, any of the so-called reality TV we seem to be fed nowadays. |
◊ 2007-09-24 17:11 |
That's right, to be a critic you don't need to be "do-er", you just need to know something's good when you see it, which comes from experience of trying many different things in a certain field. Although Clarkson does have a lot of prejudice toward American cars, but that's OK because his primary audience only has access to the European market, Top Gear may be shown in America (is it? It did win an Emmy award), but it was made for a British audience. There's probably American motoring journalists who don't like European cars. Clarkson may say some daft things, but I don't think all his opinions are utterly useless, he doesn't talk out of his arse ALL the time. -- Last edit: 2007-09-24 17:13:28 |

The thing is whenever Clarkson destroys something, it's usually something that's old and long out of production. I'd love to see him trash a new BMW X5 or Porsche Cayenne. The budget of the new Top Gear could probably easily afford to do this. |

Something really funny I've just noticed, Clarkson has his own page on AskMen! I used to think that they only covered celebrities that were really glamourous or iconic or have amazing accomplishments, like Michael Jordan or Jack Nicholson, the kind of men other men would want to be like, (I later realised the site is so shallow they'll say something good about any celebrity) the only desirable thing about Clarkson is his day job! I laughed when in the comments section they assesed his women magnetism, they forget to mention he really isn't good-looking or sexy at all! This is the UK version of the AskMen site, so they must be desperate for homegrown celebrities to look at. http://uk.askmen.com/men/entertainment_200/222_jeremy_clarkson.html -- Last edit: 2007-09-24 17:51:35 |

Did anyone else notice that the car had no engine when it landed on the caravan? |
◊ 2008-02-22 18:53 |
The interior had been stripped out also apart from the driver's seat. Remember though, CrazyCars that a 911 has the engine in the back not in the front lol -- Last edit: 2008-02-26 23:37:49 |

Can anyone identify for certain what year this 911 comes from? |
◊ 2010-05-25 17:16 |
A crude mongrel meant to look like a classic 1973 911 RS. Rear has 1974 onwards bumper lights and reflective strip. Narrow wheel rims so unlikely to be one of the more exotic versions. Too much modification to give a confirmed identity, but maybe a 1974-onwards big bumper model with an earlier set of wings and bonnet and a 1973 Carrera-style rear spoiler. No 911 ever deserves to be trashed, but the demise of this particular example was probably not the tragedy we were meant to think. Same car and footage as /images/019/474.jpg . -- Last edit: 2017-04-23 00:38:27 |

Sequence at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=No0xDPFoMq8 . I think it is a 1969+ 911 from the wheelbase (see 1st thumb and clip), which has been bodged with Carrera RS bits and a 1974+ rear. LHD and plate is GHC 801X - issued Brighton June/July 1982, but nothing on check sites. |

And the chrome-parts were blackened to give it the 1976+ look. If you have a closer look to the details, it's very obvious, that it was an absolute wreck before its smashing. Despite the cobbled mongrel-appearance, you can see, that all body-parts weren't sitting exactly. Gaps and clearances (there is no exact Englich translation for the German word "Spaltmaß" - which is for every German car-enthusiast an important point, at least a sanctuary ![]() |

Slight trace found on AA and AutoTrader - 1982, PORSCHE 911, 2200cc, PETROL, MANUAL, Red, Date of first registration: 01/05/1982. If a genuine 2.2 = 1970-71, with 1982 presumably date when imported to UK. |
