Nobody seems to be having a look at this, so I'll chance my arm. I think it's a Phantom I, and that Barker did the body, but I have no concrete evidence to support my guess. |

Rolls-Royce policy before the WWII was firstly only to supply chassis, and never bodywork, and secondly one of continuous improvement rather than step changes between models. Many of the changes incorporated as part of the improvements were mechanical and not visible under the bodywork. It is, as you say, very difficult to pick one model from another and I would not be in disagreement with the car being a late 40/50 "Silver Ghost". There were so many coachbuilders offering to construct bodies for the various quality chassis that it is quite difficult to tell whose work is on show. |

These are two different cars...the one in the second series showing a Phantom II with a replica (with much longer mudguards)body, the first shot showing a late Silver Ghost with Barker open tourer body |

All photos here are of one car only - 1925 Rolls-Royce 40/50 hp Phantom I Barker tourer chassis no. 122HC, reg. no. X-4857. 'johnfromStaffs' was pretty much 'on the money' with his first guess. Neither a Phantom II nor a 40/50 hp Silver Ghost was used in the making of this movie. Location is Colombo-Ratmalana Airport. See my comments about car and movie accompanying other photo(s) of this Phantom I with '1941 Chevrolet Suburban wagon' in this listing. |

NOTE TO WEBMASTER: Please change title of this listing to "1925 Rolls-Royce 40/50 h.p. Phantom I Barker Tourer [122HC]". Not only is 'Silver Ghost' incorrect (the featured car is definitely a Phantom I), the chassis number 122HC applies to the Phantom I range of Rolls-Royce 40/50 hp cars only, not to the earlier 40/50 hp Silver Ghost models. Thank you. |

Sir Webmaster doesn't do nights, so you'll just have to make do with me. We don't combine 40/50 with Phantom I according to the big sheet on the wall - don't ask me to explain - I'm just on a day placement from the Jobcentre. |

Thanks, 'dsl'. The Silver Ghost, New Phantom (retrospectively named 'Phantom I'), Phantom II, and Phantom III were all 40/50 hp cars and classified thus by Rolls-Royce Limited. Also see 'The Rolls-Royce 40/50 hp: Ghosts, Phantoms and Spectres' by W.J. Oldham; published by G.T. Foulis, 1974. So may I respectfully suggest that the 'big sheet on the wall' is updated to show the Phantom I (or 'New Phantom') as a 40/50 hp car too? Perhaps a note to this effect, addressed to Sir Webmaster and pinned to his pillow for his perusal upon waking from slumber, might be useful! PS - enjoy the rest of your day placement! |
