We bought a used 61 Country Squire about 1964. I took it on the expressway between Ann Arbor and Detroit Michigan to test drive it. Had my wife and our two small girls in the wagon. At 120 mph with quite a bit of throttle left, I decided that it ran OK! Discovered later that it was one of about 300 built with the 390 engine used for the police interceptors. Had to argue with the Ford parts people when trying to get some parts for the engine. Most did not believe it had a 390 in it. Eventually the locking differential failed, and then the body rusted away. Bought a used 1965 Country Squire next, but it had a new body and suspension, handling was terrible compared to the 1961 version. |

61 Town and Country’s were mostly all 390’s. They had larger than normal front brakes, and the police interceptor engine was only 330 hp. You could order the 375 and 401 hp engine in 1961. The speedometer only went to 120 so your comment about it going 130 Is totally unfounded. This 61 wagon was used in about half the series. It was used in almost every episode as a back ground car. |
