Birch Bros built much of their own bodywork, but the fleet list does not show that they ever had a Titanic. Strange. |

The reason that Birch Bros records show no Titanics is that this is a three axle Tiger, and not a Titanic. Birch Bros bought two Tiger TS7T in 1936, and four Tiger TS7D in 1937. All were fitted with single deck 43 seat Birch Bros coachwork, but fleet numbers K52 and K55, both TS7D models, were re-bodied by Birch with high bridge double deck bodywork in 1943. This is either K52, DXE 872 renumbered as K152, or K55, DXV 176 renumbered as K153, after the rebuilding. The description of the bus should therefore read as follows: - 1937 Leyland Tiger TS7D/Birch Bros H34/30R. TS7T has only second axle driven, third one trailing, TS7D has double axle drive with a differential between the second and third axles, as well as within the axles, so that all four wheels can rotate at different speeds without damage to the driveshafts. The rear wheels are only single rather than twin. Birch Bros do not appear to have bought any other three axle Leylands. -- Last edit: 2014-02-01 18:22:44 |

There's even more to this saga. The Birch Bros fleet list calls these buses rear entrance, but this bus seems to have a sliding door in the front entrance position. Birch also rebuilt the two 1936 TS7T buses into double deck, again referred to as rear entrance. Either the fleet list has got it wrong, or there are more three axle Tigers hidden in the savannah. |
