(Page revised to capture the Horizon - originally opened for the Chrysler Hunter, which now has own page.)

Is the Chrysler Horizon in background unusual for NZ? Import or local assembly?

As far as the Horizon is concerned: I'd say rather imported than CKD. Wikipedia- which you cannot always rely on, I know- says:
"The main production lines of Talbot Horizon were Poissy factory in France and Ryton in England. It was also manufactured in Spain and in Finland by Saab-Valmet from 1979 onwards. The Finnish Talbot Horizons integrated many Saab components, especially in the interior. The Saab-Valmet factory also made a series of 2385 cars that ran on kerosene or turpentine.

The Horizon was produced in France and also Britain (where production had begun in the 1980s) until June 1986, and in Spain and Finland until 1987, when it was replaced by the Peugeot 309, a car developed in the UK, originally destined to be sold as the Talbot Arizona. The end of Horizon production in the beginning of 1987 also marked the end of the Talbot badge on passenger cars. However, the North American version of the car continued to be produced until 1990."

And this website doesn't mention NZ at all... http://www.rootes-chrysler.co.uk/chry-horizon.html

Thanks - I'll run with that. My guess would therefore be that this Horizon would be UK assembled as RHD and there would still be tariff advantages between Commonwealth countries. Interesting that wiki highlights the 309/Talbot Arizona as UK developed - my impression was French developed although with intent of joint UK/F production.

IIRC the 309/Talbot Arizona was originally developed by Rootes/Chrysler pre-PSA as a Sunbeam replacement.

Talbot Horizons were not sold in NZ Although we did get in late 70s a limited run of Chrysler Alpines 5 door Hatchbacks (Simca 1308GT) usually the top of the range model imported fully built up Right Hand Drive and Distributed by Todd Motors who also built Chrysler Aus and GB products from Australia and the UK as CKD kits
As of 1990 there was just 1 Matra-Simca Rancho in New Zealand - I remember seeing it on the Picton Ferry at that time; it was green :)

It was certainly something for a Horizon to make an appearance in the film, being that it was never sold as a new vehicle in NZ. The vehicle in this shot may in fact had been one bought in for evaluation purposes by the Porirua based Todd Motors, who were the assemblers and distributors of Chrysler, Talbot and Mitsubishi in NZ at the time.
A likely reason that the Horizon was not sold by Todd Motors was the Mitsubishi Mirage, which was introduced in NZ by Todd Motors for 1979.
