This scene was based on the shootout between the Bondurant brothers and US Marshal agent Charles "Charley C.L." Rakes and Franklin County Deputy Sheriff Henry "H.T." Abshire that occurred at the Maggodee Creek Bridge near Franklin, Virginia. In reality, the shootout occurred on the 19th December 1930 when Jack and Forrest Bondurant carrying a load ran into a police roadblock and drew their firearms on Deputy Rakes and Abshire who both then drew their firearms and opened fire on Jack and Forrest, wounding both brothers. Unlike the scene, Marshal Rakes didn't die in the shootout, instead he died at the age of 39 from pneumonia on the 14th October 1934. At the time of his death, Marshal Rakes was meant to testified against the Viriginia Commonwealth Attorney Charles Lee in the Great Moonshine Conspiracy Trial of 1935. -- Last edit: 2025-10-15 12:24:06 |
