On second thought, it has the smaller 1973 only bumpers

No, this is a 1975+. The 6.9 did not exist prior to that. This car is a Euro-spec model that was imported to the US during the grey market period.

Confirmed by the rear antenna, which is seen in the main pic. Has US headlights, but they may have been required to import the car. Taking off the "Made for USA" tag unless somebody knows better.

Can't imagine they would trash an actual 6.9, but I guess at this point it was just a used car.

Yes, 1975–76 6.9 models were only sold new outside of North America. The 1977 model year was the first time it was available through official channels in the US (i.e. Mercedes-Benz dealerships). The fact that this only has the US-spec headlights and taillights confirms what you said; it's a grey market import.

However, the 450SEL emblem is missing, which all the RoW models originally came with. Could it actually be a 1977+ US-spec model with Euro-spec bumpers retrofitted? Could be. But my money is on the other way around, based on the countless other federalized imports I've seen from this period.

As for its treatment, yes, sadly a 6.9 was just a used luxury car by 1989. A legend to those in the know, but just an older Mercedes to production companies that would rent cars out to studios.

This one appears to have been Magnetite Blue Metallic (931), a 1975–79 color, with a blue interior (can't tell if it's velour or leather).
