Sorry, this layer is typical for the tempered, Sekurit-glass, not the laminated version. |

ah, i have meant Sekurit Glass, i know difference "Sicherheitsglas" "Verbund Sicherheitsglas" but how they name it in english is a mystery resolved by your kind response, so it is tempered not laminated, anyway i remember noone believed me, that it is visible difference at certain angle, i have to check my eyewear first, they said ![]() -- Last edit: 2012-07-08 18:58:13 |

laminiert = verbunden "Sekurit" is the common term, but only a brand name. Germans usually say "Tempo" to soft tissues (Americans say "Kleenex") and "Tesa" to sellotape (Americans "Scotch tape") |

how many germans use the term "Laminat" for cheap surrogat of Parquet, without knowing the origin of it. It depends on someones experience, as for me it is compound of resine with fabric of glas or carbon used to form body of Motorboat Airplane etc. I remember VW and all the others had small white lettering in corner of side window "Sekurit" plus type code -- Last edit: 2012-07-08 19:05:30 |

Well, technicially Laminat is laminated, as the window-panes. Several layers of material (mainly plant fibres) were connected chemicially (horizontally). Parquet are small wooden blocs and stripes, also agglutinated, but vertical and not in more layers. So the term Laminat is not wrong for that. |

@andrepa: True, but back then the sidewindows were not laminated. They were made of tempered glass and will not break into sharp pieces, like ordinary window glass. If I recall correctly front windows/windscreens were first required to be tempered, as people had been severly injured on normal glass, later laminated. The latter is simply two layers of (tempered) glass with plastic between them. This is what gives the characteristic pattern you see here. Now even sidewindows can be laminated, for added comfort and safety. The 'Sekurit' logo means it is made by Saint-Gobain Sekurit ![]() -- Last edit: 2012-07-08 21:12:03 |

@tore-40 thank you very much, i am very happy with resonance on my finding! Great you are posting the logo + symbols sying it is soundproof and range of temperature i once saw the foil alone isn´t that transparent in sharp angle before laminated, due to refraction indexes of glas combined with foil The VW has flat front windows so angle is the same for drivers window on the whole surface- in the end the pattern we see on VW + Ingo talked about must came from extrem thin film of air embedded and its more or less thickness evoking interference of light > total reflection same thing a Coke bottle bottom can look like being black I am aware we are getting very physically now, but it can be helpful for identification |

You only can see the foil of laminated glass, when it's defect - whens the layers are coming loose. Then this area of the pane become milky white. |

ingo: Agree, usually starting in the lower corners, worse on curved window panes, it seems. But the first laminated ones were probably not of such quality or materials as you see today, some were simply glued together, I guess flaws in the production could make the layers visible under special light conditions. I remember also I could see a rainbow pattern in these old (not so old then) windows with sunglasses (polaroids) on. I have read Sweden required laminated windscreens from 1967 on, it could match my memories regarding the changes that the same goes for Norway. |

the visible rainbow colors are exactly what i meant caused by extremely thin layers of different refractive index could be layers of enlosed air, bewtween microscope glas plates a drop of oil on a wet spot, as well positive interference causes the phantastic rainbow colors as Ingo says, the VW has only tempered glas, but brand new, although we can see alternating waffle-weave pattern on it, caused by areas of different refraction index coming from production process itself, it is a copy of production device the glas is tempered with! X X X X _X X X X X X X it only apperas on sharp angles when you look at a dark background, from outside into the car, so no safety problem, but it is visible on factory new window, like here -- Last edit: 2012-07-10 01:32:46 |
