Despite the philosophy it would have been very problematic to pack a conventional stright engine in it, because the front is too low for that. The guys, who have mounted other engines in RO's as the Ford V4-block or from a Porsche 924 -only with major changes- Alfasud or Subaru (the last RO 80 in Israel had such), had experienced these problems. There were rumpurs, that a NSU K 70 with a Wankel-engine was planned, but there was never a prototype of it. In the earliest VW K 70 you see a few unused lugs and humps in the engine-space, placed with the ulterior motives to mount a RO 80-cooler or semi-automatic gearbox, but that's all.
