It’s at least a 1998 model. The M3 has door-mounted side impact airbags. The grey Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) airbag identification badge is visible on the door. 1998 was an important milestone in safety for the 3-Series, as it was the first year model side impact airbags became available. They are however limited in their ability to protect the driver and first passenger as they always remain at a fixed point, while the seats can be moved fore or aft. That means if the seats are too far forward or too far rearward, the airbag’s protection may not be as effective in a side crash. Still, it was a step in the right direction, and these cars are safer with the side airbags, than without. |
