This scene was an reenactment of the arrival of the Cairo Gang who arrived in Ireland in January 1920 to spy on and assassinate high ranking members of the IRA and any associates of the IRA. The Cairo Gang were a group of 20 ex-British soldiers and active officers who were trained by both the British Special Branch and MI5 as part of Britain's Directorate of Home Intelligence, upon the arrival, the Cairo Gang were assigned to the Dublin District Division (known as the Dublin District Special Branch or the DDSB and D Branch) under the command of General Gerald Boyd. Boyd was later replaced as D Branch commander by Lieutenant Colonel Walter Wilson who arrived in Dublin in May 1920. After the Bloody Sunday Massacre, D Branch was transferred over to the Combined Intelligence Service (or the CIS) commanded by Brigadier-General, Sir Ormonde Winter in January 1921, with the surviving officers transferred to the CIS where they remained until the end of the Irish War of Independence in July 1921. It is believed that the Cairo Gang got their name from their usual meeting spot, the Café Cairo at 59 Grafton Street in Dublin while it was believed they got the name from their military service during the First World War in the Middle East. -- Last edit: 2022-08-13 17:23:19 |
