This scene was the reenactment of the occupation of the Four Courts Building in Central Dublin by members of the Ant-Treaty IRA under the command of Rory O'Connor that begun on the morning of the 14th April 1922 and concluded on the 27th June 1922. The occupation began when 200 militants of the Anti-Treaty IRA along with O'Connor as their spokesman begun seizing the Four Courts Buildings and other key buildings in Central Dublin as an attempt to provoke another war with the British Government to achieve an "Irish Republic" rather than an "Irish Free State". The downfall of the occupation started on the afternoon of the 22nd June 1922 when the British Field Marshal Sir Henry Hughes Wilson was shot and killed by members of the Anti-Treaty IRA London Brigade, Reginald Dunne and Joseph O'Sullivan on the doorstep of his home in London. Sir Wilson was also the security adviser to James Craig who served as the first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland from the 7th June 1921 to the 24th November 1940. Four days after the assassination of Sir Wilson on the 26th June 1922, Anti-Treaty forces occupying the Four Courts Building had kidnapped an Irish National Army General Jeremiah "JJ Ginger" O'Connell, prompting Collins and the Irish National Army to accept help from the British Government who in turn provided two 18-pounder field artillery to end the Anti-Treaty forces' occupation of the Four Courts Building. -- Last edit: 2024-11-30 08:41:06 |
